"I see you, I hear you, I acknowledge your presence. And I wish for those who don’t know you to do the same.
For just because we don’t understand you doesn’t mean you have nothing to say."

Beate Wätzel

A home. A place to live. Here, adults with both physical and intellectual disabilities reside, sometimes in closed-off areas. Many outsiders have no access, no contact, no shared connection. How can a true encounter happen when the residents are considered so “different”? Some cannot speak or understand; some adults function cognitively at the level of a two-year-old. This otherness, caused by their impairments, is often accompanied by unpredictability, which can make others uncomfortable and often leads to rejection or reluctance.

I take time for their stories. I give each resident the space to connect with me in their own way. I listen, I observe. A glance, a gesture, a posture—everything speaks, if only we are willing to listen. Communication does not happen through the mind; it is about presence and mindfulness. Again and again.
